9 Newborn Puppies Found Abandoned on the Street in a Tub in North Carolina
A heartbreaking discovery in Davie County, North Carolina, has sparked an investigation after nine newborn puppies were found abandoned in a plastic tub on the side of the road.
The litter, estimated to be no more than five weeks old, was found by a good Samaritan in the Mountview Drive area. The individual quickly contacted the Davie County Animal Shelter, alerting them to the dire situation.
Lisa Nielsen, the shelter’s animal services director, emphasized the dangers the puppies faced.
“It’s wintertime; anything could have happened to them,” Nielsen said.
With the cold temperatures and the presence of local predators such as coyotes, the puppies were extremely vulnerable.
Once the shelter was notified, an officer was dispatched to retrieve the puppies. Upon arrival at the shelter, they were examined, cleaned, and given necessary medical care.
“They were pretty dirty. We don’t know how long they were in there,” Nielsen explained. “Nine puppies, in a tub—you can imagine what puppies do.”
Thankfully, all the puppies are in good health and have received their vaccinations. The litter has been given a fun and fitting theme—each puppy has been named after a type of potato, including Spud, Tater, and Russet.
They will be available for adoption through the Davie County Humane Society within the next month.
While these puppies were fortunate to be rescued, Nielsen reminded the public that abandoning animals is a criminal offense. She urged pet owners to spay and neuter their pets to prevent unwanted litters and encouraged anyone struggling to care for their animals to reach out to their local animal shelter.
“Many shelters are ‘open intake’ and will take in animals free of charge,” Nielsen added.
