Local San Antonio Shelter Launches Virtual Fostering Program

In response to the pressing animal welfare crisis in San Antonio, local shelters are grappling with an overwhelming influx of abandoned and stray pets. While many individuals are eager to lend a helping hand, not everyone can commit to fostering a furry friend in their own home.

Recognizing this challenge, a local rescue group has stepped up with a creative solution: the launch of a virtual fostering program, offering individuals the opportunity to support shelter dogs through monthly donations.

God’s Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organization based in Von Ormy and serving South Texas, has recently introduced this virtual foster initiative with the aim of providing sustained care for shelter dogs in need.

"Each year, over 1,200 dogs find refuge at God’s Dog Rescue, pushing our shelter facilities to their limits and stretching our resources thin," explains the organization’s website. "Through our monthly Virtual Foster program, we aim to secure the necessary funds to provide quality care for our furry friends, including essential supplies, nutritious food, and vital medical attention."

So, how does the program operate? Prospective virtual fosters can visit the organization's website, where they'll find a comprehensive list of available foster dogs. These dogs are typically those who have been at the shelter for an extended period or require specialized medical care. Once a prospective foster selects a furry companion, they can choose a monthly donation level from three tiers and decide on the duration of their commitment—be it three months, six months, or a full year.

Each donation tier corresponds to different levels of care. A $12 contribution covers the basics, including food and treats, while a $30 donation adds grooming and hygiene care into the mix. For those able to give $55, they'll also help cover quarterly vaccinations and health screenings for their chosen dog.

However, virtual fostering isn't just about financial support—it's also about advocacy. Virtual fosters are encouraged to become vocal advocates for their chosen dogs on social media platforms, helping to raise awareness and ultimately find forever homes for these animals. And here's the heartwarming part: if a dog gets adopted during the virtual fostering period, the funds allocated to that pup will be redirected to support other shelter dogs in the program.
