Meet The Dogs BVSPCA Welcomes from Florida Following Hurricane Milton
The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) has taken in close to 100 shelter animals from Florida in the wake of Hurricane Milton. This comes just days after the organization received 30 cats and kittens ahead of the storm's arrival.
Thanks to an emergency airlift sponsored by Petco Love, cats, kittens, and dogs from the Hillsborough Pet Resource Center and Friends of Strays in West Palm Beach were safely relocated. The animals landed at Chester County Airport before the flight continued on to New York.
These animals were already available for adoption before the hurricane, and the relocation effort is meant to free up space in Florida shelters. This allows those shelters to concentrate on reuniting pets with their families and supporting local shelters that may have been damaged during the storm.
BVSPCA's CEO, Adam Lamb, emphasized the importance of community support during such crises: “Our everyday work doesn’t stop when we step up to help during a natural disaster. We need our community to join us in this emergency situation by adopting and donating.”
Most of the animals have been transferred to BVSPCA's West Chester and New Castle campuses, with some being sent to partner shelters in Pennsylvania and New York. Some pets are immediately available for adoption, while others will undergo medical evaluations before being placed in homes.
To encourage adoptions, BVSPCA and its partner shelters are waiving adoption fees for all large adult dogs and adult cats through October 16. Animals from the disaster zones will be held in isolation for 14 days before being made available for adoption.
Founded in 1929, the Brandywine Valley SPCA is the first open-admission, no-kill shelter serving Pennsylvania and Delaware, with five adoption centers across the region.
