San Diego Humane Society Launches 'Dog Day Out' Program
The San Diego Humane Society has just launched an exciting new initiative that lets animal lovers get involved in helping shelter dogs find their forever homes—without even adopting them! The Dog Day Out program allows you to take a shelter dog on an adventure for a few hours, giving them a break from the shelter and a chance to socialize and explore the outside world. Whether it's a peaceful stroll by the ocean, a hike through local trails, or just lounging at home, this program offers a unique opportunity for both the dogs and their human companions.
Why 'Dog Day Out' Matters
The goal of Dog Day Out is to give adoptable dogs a change of scenery, and in the process, provide valuable insights into their personalities outside of the shelter environment. Taking a dog out for the day helps them release pent-up energy, interact with new people, and experience real-life situations that they might not get in the shelter. Not only does this help the dogs feel more comfortable, but it also gives the shelter team a better understanding of how each dog behaves in a variety of settings, which can lead to better matches with potential adopters.
Plus, the photos and videos you capture during your outing can be used to showcase the dog to a wider audience, helping them get noticed and hopefully adopted more quickly!
How It Works
Signing up for Dog Day Out is easy. All you need to do is book an appointment at the San Diego Humane Society campus of your choice. After that, you’ll be paired with an adoptable dog (usually a larger one, as they tend to benefit the most from a day out) and provided with everything you need for a successful outing. This includes a manual with instructions, a backpack full of supplies, and a map with recommended locations to visit.
Whether you plan to go on a hike, spend time at the beach, or simply enjoy a relaxing day at home, your time with your furry companion will help them get closer to finding a permanent home. And the best part? You’ll also get the chance to learn more about the dog’s personality and provide feedback to the shelter team, which can be crucial in matching the dog with the right family.
Important Guidelines
The program comes with a few important guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of both the dogs and their handlers:
Dogs should not interact with other dogs during the outing, including your own pets.
Activities should avoid dog parks or dog beaches, to prevent any potential conflicts or risks.
An adult (18 or older) must always be in control of the dog’s leash, especially when children are involved.
Unless the dog is securely in your home or a fenced backyard, they must remain on a leash throughout the outing.
You must stay within San Diego County, and a cell phone must be kept with you in case the shelter needs to get in touch.
If weather conditions are unfavorable (rainy or over 85°F), outdoor activities will need to be rescheduled.
The Dog Day Out program is a fantastic way to make a difference in the life of a shelter dog without making a long-term commitment. It’s a fun, rewarding experience for both you and the dog—and who knows, you might just help your furry companion find their perfect match along the way!
