Man Reunited With His Missing Rescue Dog, Oreo, 5 Days After Devastating Los Angeles Wildfire

Amid the devastating Pacific Palisades wildfire, a heartwarming reunion has provided a glimmer of hope. Casey Colvin, who lost his home in the fire, found his dog Oreo alive and well after five long days of separation.

The wildfire began on January 7, prompting widespread evacuations across Los Angeles. Colvin rushed home from work after hearing the evacuation orders, spending hours in traffic to try to save his pets. While firefighters were able to rescue one of his dogs, Tika, Oreo fled in fear and went missing.

“I literally rescued them off the streets, they deserve better than this,” a sobbing Colvin told reporter Liz Kreutz while sitting in standstill traffic. “How do I get to my house?”

On Jan. 12, Kreutz shared an update on the search efforts. Colvin said Oreo had been spotted twice, and in one instance was “seen sleeping in the rubble of a neighbor’s home.”

Here’s the text Colin sent to LIz Kruetz after hearing he was spotted:

“I was planning on sleeping in front of my house after curfew, but Brentwood was on fire and two sets of firefighters told me the winds are too unpredictable and that they were afraid that we could all be killed. Right after I left the perimeter I got a call from my neighbor that Oreo was sleeping next to the chimney of his house and that his contractor had tried to chase Oreo and the dog ran off. I also had two sets of firefighters call me and tell me that they had seen Oreo eat a bowl of food that I had left out for him to try and lure them out of the bushes and the firefighters were kind enough to refill the bowl.”

In a heartwarming video shared by NBC reporter Liz Kreutz, who raised awareness for the story, Oreo runs to Colin for an emotional reunion.

“Oreo has been found!” Kreutz shared on Instagram, describing the emotional reunion. “The moment he saw Casey, he came running. An incredible moment and a bright spot in such a devastating time.”

How You Can Help Pets and Families Affected by Wildfires

The Pacific Palisades wildfire has left many families and animals displaced. Here are some ways you can assist:

  1. Donate to Animal Shelters
Local shelters like Pasadena Humane Society and Los Angeles Animal Services are providing care for displaced pets. Donations of money, food, and supplies can make a significant impact.

  2. Volunteer Your Time
Animal shelters and disaster relief organizations often need extra help during emergencies. From walking dogs to helping with administrative tasks, your time can make a difference.

  3. Consider Fostering a Pet
Many shelters are overwhelmed during disasters and need foster families to provide temporary homes for animals. This can free up space for other animals in need.

  4. Prepare for Emergencies
Wildfires can happen unexpectedly. Ensure your pets are microchipped, have collars with up-to-date information, and are included in your family’s emergency plan.

While the Pacific Palisades wildfire has caused immense destruction, stories like Casey and Oreo’s highlight the power of determination, community support, and the bond between humans and their pets.

If you’d like to support ongoing relief efforts, consider donating to organizations assisting both people and animals affected by the fires. Together, we can help rebuild lives and create more moments of hope.
